By shifting the role from data scientist to machine learning engineer, Priow gets to expose herself to more challenges and is able to contribute more areas of the work in the Machine Learning and AI world at Sertis. As the beginning of her journey was challenging, it was well worth it as she found herself going above and beyond at work. Priow recognizes there’s still more room for improvement and it is what she’s working on for herself everyday.

Explore her journey through July’s edition of Sertizens Stories, as she shares the way her team works in a speak-up culture; always sharing new ideas, raising problems and asking questions. Lastly, hear what she likes the most about working at Sertis.

1. My journey at Sertis

Before joining Sertis, I worked as a Data Scientist, so I got to work in both the research and engineering world at that time. One of the biggest problems for Data Science or AI projects is to productionize models. However, to be a Machine Learning Engineer (MLE) it is to focus on filling these gaps in the Machine Learning and AI world.

Joining Sertis as an MLE gives me a very good experience. I have contributed in many areas e.g. model pipeline, model serving, CI/CD, MLOps, model conversion, and optimization. Also, my team lead always works with me on my objectives and career path, so I won’t get lost, and see a clearer direction.

2. Comparing my Day 1 to present

As I mentioned that I was a Data Scientist before, so I only had some background knowledge and experience on Machine Learning and AI production. It was really challenging at the beginning as I needed to learn a lot of new things.

However, with good team members, we learn and share everything all the time along with the culture of always raising and asking questions, which makes me pick things up very quickly. Although, at the moment I have gained more knowledge and experience compared to Day 1, it’s still a challenge to work here as we need to always learn new things every day.

3. My most proud of initiative

Honestly, I don’t have any 100% initiative project as we work as a team. However, I’m proud of every project the team has worked on, as we have experienced working from really small production projects (20–30 users) to huge production projects (millions of users). What I’m proud of is to be able to deliver intelligent ideas and models from our brilliant research team to end-users, successfully.

4. The best thing about working at Sertis

For a working team environment, I like the culture of always asking, and speaking up. I always loved the phrase “no idea is stupid idea” and “no question is stupid question”, so we ask, we raise problems, we come up with new ideas all the time. Even though at times the idea may not work, at least we have improved it together.

Something not work related, I’m also a scuba diver, and what I sometimes need other than financial stability is holidays. Sertis is one of the companies I know that provides a fair amount of annual leave. We have a total of 15 days annual leave, plus 5 days personal leave with a roll over option.

5. My advice to Sertizen new joiners

In my opinion, there’s no exact formula for working and living one’s life because everybody is different. You deserve to live your life, and learn from it. Working at Sertis will encourage you to be a person who is willing to learn new things all the time. Sertis allows you to have self-learning hours each week, so you will not be spending 5 days a week only working on your tasks and projects. Another unrelated working advice is about all the delicious food from many restaurants around our office. Join us, you won’t be disappointed with both working, and eating.
